Maharashtra’s Four Eminent Personalities Conferred With Padma Awards




 New Delhi, 11: Maharashtra’s four eminent personalities, Prof. Vaman Kendra (theatre), Dr. Ravindra and Dr. Smita Kolhe (Social Work) and singer Shankar Mahadevan were honored with the Padma Shri awards at the hands of the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind today.
The President presented one Padma Vibhushan, eight Padma Bhushan and forty-six Padma Shri Awards at a Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Darbar Hall of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
A total of 55 Awards were presented today to the dignitaries performing excellently in various fields like Medicine, Art, Social Service, Education, and Literature and so on. Professor Waman Kendra, Shankar Mahadevan and the Kolhe couple have made outstanding contributions in the field of Art and Medical education.  They were bestowed with the Padma Shri Awards.  During this event, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Home Shri Hansraj Ahir and dignitaries from different fields were present.
The presentation of Padma Awards would be done in two phases. In the first phase held today, one Padma Vibhushan, eight Padma Bhushan and forty-six Padma Shri Awards were conferred, inclusive of four eminent personalities from the State.
Padma Shree Dr. Ravindra And Dr. Smita Kolhe
Padma Shree awardees Dr. Ravindra and Dr. Smita Kolhe have significantly contributed in the field of medicine.  They have immensely contributed in medical sector. They both have been working for the welfare of Korku tribals in the naxal affected areas in Melghat, Amravati District for more than 34 years. Providing of affordable health care, the Kolhes have provided health services to the poor and the underprivileged people.
Padma Shree Prof. Waman Kendre
Prof. Waman Kendra, a renowned dramatist and former Director of National School of Drama, was honored with the Padma Shree award for his extensive contribution in the field of Arts.  He has spent 35 years in the field of dramatic education. He works in plays delivering message of social justice and empowerment. He has successfully organized workshops for dramatical training in foreign countries as well.
Padma Shree Mahadevan
Renowned singer and music organizer Shankar Mahadevan was conferred the Padma Shri award for his significant contribution made field of Arts. Shri Mahadevan has sung more than 3,000 songs in multiple languages. Shri Mahadevan has presented classical music, jazz, fusion, rock, folk music, film music and devotional songs across the country and abroad.
A total of 112 Padma Awards was announced on the eve of Republic Day for this year, which includes 11 people from Maharashtra, out of which 4 were awarded today. The next phase of these awards will be on March 16, 2019.
