New Delhi, 21: Maharashtra’s six dignitaries received the prestigious Padma Awards. The Managing Director of Serum Institute of India, Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman of Tata Sons, Natarajan Chandrasekaran were conferred Padma Bhushan Awards, while Dr. Anil Rajvanshi, Dr.Vijay Kumar Dongre, Dr.HimmatraoBawaskarand Dr.BhimsenSinghal were bestowed with the Padma Shri Awards at the hands of the President, Shri Ram NathKovind at RashtrapatiBhavan, today.

             The Padma Awards, the highest civilian award in the country, were conferred in a Civil Investiture Ceremony-I, at Darbar Hall,Rashtrapat iBhavan. The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and the Union Home Minister, Shri Amit Shah along with senior dignitaries were present on the occasion.

             Renowned entrepreneurs, Chairman of Tata Sons Natarajan Chandrasekaran and Managing Director of Serum Institute of India, Dr.Cyrus Poonawalla were awarded 'Padma Bhushan Award' for their outstanding contribution in the field of Trade and Industry. A total of 54 Padma Shri Awards were conferred today in the first phase. The Padma Shri Awardees from Maharashtra included, Dr HimmatraoBawaskar, Dr Vijaykumar Vinay Dongre, Dr. Anil Kumar Rajvanshi and Dr.Bhimsen Singhal.

                     Padma Bhushan Natarajan Chandrasekaran (Trade and Industry )

            The Chairman of Tata Sons, Shri NatrajanChandrasekaran was conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award, thethird highest civilian award in the Trade and Industry category.

He is the Senior Business Leader and Chairman of Tata Sons andis among the 17 Padma Bhushan Awardees to receive this Award for 2022.

 

Padma Bhushan Shri Cyrus Poonawalla (Trade and Industry)

            The Veteran Pharma Leader and Founder of World’s largest Vaccine manufacturer, Serum Institute of India, Shri Cyrus Poonawalla received the prestigious Padma Bhushan Award, the third highest Civilian Award for his outstanding achievements in the Trade and Industry Category. This institute has played a crucial role in India’s fight against Covid-19.

 

                          Padma Shri Awardee Dr.Himmatrao Bawaskar (Medicine)

            Dr HimmatraoBawaskar was awarded the Padma Shri for his distinguished services in the field of Medicine.  He is globally acclaimed for his treatment and research on Scorpion and Snakebites. His path-breaking work on deaths caused by the sting of the red scorpion has been taken notice of by the Lancet Journal. He has been serving the needy in the Raigad District of Maharashtra.

                             Padma Shri Dr Vijaykuma rVinayak Dongre (Medicine)

            Padma Shri Awardee, Dr Dongrewas conferred with the fourth highest civilian Award at the hands of the President, Shri RamnathKovind. Dr.Dongre is an expert on leprosy and has treated many patients at Sevagram, Wardha. He has also conducted extnsive research and has been awarded the International Gandhi award in 2013.

                                     Padma Shri Dr.Bhimsen Singhal (Medicine)

            Dr.BhimsenSinghal was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri Award for his outstanding contributions in the field of Medicine, particularly Neurology. A veteran Neurologist, he is renowned for his incredible work in the field Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

                     Padma Shri Dr. Anil Kumar Rajvanshi (Scinece and Engineering)

            Dr. Anil Kumar Rajvanshi was conferred with the prestigious Padma Shri Award for his distinguished services in the field of Science and Engineering.  A Grassroots Scientist, Dr.Rajvanshi hails from Satara District and has tremendously worked on the sustainability and rural development.  He has served for more than three decades in the Nimbkar Agriculture Research Institute (NARI) at Phaltan, a rural town in Satara District.

             A total of 128 Padma awards were announced year 2022. These include 4 Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards. Among the dignitaries who will receive the award are 34 women. These honorary awards have been announced to 10 immigrant Indians and posthumous Padma awards to 13 dignitaries.

                      The Padma Awards are among the highest civilian awards of India and are conferred in three categories-- Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The awards are conferred in various fields such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.

             Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order, and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. The Civil Investiture Ceremony –II is scheduled to be held on March 28.
