Nanded’s Nadaf Ejaj Rauf And 17 Courageous Kids To Get National Bravery Award













New Delhi, Jan.18: National Bravery Awards have been announced in the backdrop of 69th Republic Day. Maharashtra’s Nadaf Ejaz Abdul Rauf from Nanded would be felicitated with this prestigious Award.  This year, 18 courageous children from across the country have been honored with this award for 2017. Three of the Awards have been given posthumously.
Nadaf Ejaz Abdul Rauf, a 17 year old lad hails from Ardhapur Taluka’s Pardi village of Nanded. With his indomitable courage, he saved lives of two girls drowning in the nearby lake on April 30, 2017.
The National Bravery Awards are a set of awards given annually to children for "meritorious acts of bravery against all odds." These awards are given in Five categories every year under the aegis of the Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) who scrutinize the applications and select the National Bravery Award winners.
Nadaf exhibited indomitable courage in saving lives of two young girls, who otherwise could have drowned in a local lake at Pardi. These girls along with some ladies had  come to the shore to wash their linen. However, one of the girls slipped into the lake.  Seeing this, the other girl jumped in to the lake to save her. However, it became difficult for them to come out. To their rescue, two more girls jumped into the lake. They also did not know to swim. So they shouted, and their shrieks were heard by Nadaf who was passing nearby. Without wasting a single minute, he jumped to save their lives.  The lake was 2Thousand feet long, 60 feet wide and 20 feet deep.  Exhibiting his immense courage and presence of mind, he swam 20 feet deep, but, could save only two of them.
These children will be honored on 24th January 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The children have been selected from 13 states: namely, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Karnataka, Punjab, Meghlaya, Odisha, Nagaland, Gujarat, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand. The award winners will also take part in the Republic Day March.
The award was first instituted in 1952. This selection committee consists of representatives from government and non-government organizations.
The total number of children, 7 girls and 11 children will be conferred with the National Bravery Awards for 2017. This award has been posthumously awarded to 3 children. Medal, certificate and cash are the nature of the award.  They also receive financial assistance to complete their schooling. Financial aid is provided to students studying medicine and engineering till completion of degree under Indira Gandhi Scholarship.
The National Bravery Awards are divided into five categories: Bharat Award, Sanjay Chopra Award, Geeta Chopra Award, Bapu Gaidhani Award and General National Bravery Awards.
