MAHARASHTRA NGO BAGS BIOTECHNOLOGY SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT NATIONAL AWARD


NEW DELHI,05: The NGO Shramjivi Janata Sahayyak Mandal (SJSM) from Maharashtra  has achieved  Biotechnology Social Devlopment Award-2015 for valuable contribution in the field of social development by the tool of  biotechnology.


        Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Dr. HarshVardhan gave away this award to the president of  SJMC, Bala Saheb Kolakar in the two day Global Biotechnology Summit organized by biotechnology department of Science and Technology Ministry at Vigyan Bhawan 5th and 6th  February. Union  Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Radha Mohan Singh,  Union Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Nirmala Sitaraman and Union  Minister of State for  Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Y.S.Chowdary were also present on the occasion.


        The SJMC organization of the state had contributed their best by delivering essential needs to our community such as health care and hygiene,generating more avenues for livelihoods,empowering people and developing local and social entrepreneurs,producing skilled workers and advocacy.NGO founded in 1977, by a group educatedyouth from nomadic tribe to promote development of socially and economically backward communities residing in remote villages of the western ghat and the Konkan around Satara and Raigad districts of Maharashtra.
  
          SJSM started with milk cooperatives as this was the traditional occupation of the Gavlis.The organization energized more than 150 primary schools which are the major strengths of the project.The NGO to spread the benefits to more than 500 villages and 35,000 families in the area and made a campaign to eradicate the practice of child –marriage among the Dhanagar-Gavlis through girl’s education as the main rallying point.The most distinguishing activity was the organization of Kathkaris, one of the four main primitive tribal of Maharashtra.
