Delhi, 02: ‘Pursuing the agenda of creating greater understanding about India
and its civilization in the global community, would be focussed upon
meticulously ’, said Member
of Parliament, Dr Vinay Sahastrabuddhe,
after taking over as the Chairman of Indian Council for Cultural Relations,
here today.
Recently, Dr. Sahasrabuddhe was elected as
the President of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), which is a
distinguished body of the central government, and on Tuesday he took charge in
the presence of the Director General of the Council Riva Ganguly Das and senior
officials.
Addressing the media after his taking over,
Dr. Sahasrabuddhe said, the 70-year-old ICCR is an old and distinguished
institution. Various distinguished dignitaries have been elected as the
President of this organization. While taking this legacy forward, there is a
need to pursue the agenda of creating greater understanding about India and its
civilization, in the global community of academicians, men of letters, artistes
and thinkers to a higher level through multiple efforts in a structured manner.
Adding further he said, the institutional strength of ICCR needs to be
consolidated through its more pronounced footprint all over the world, in a
scientific manner through evolving a more result oriented work culture towards
further translating popular global goodwill into a more vibrant diplomatic
relationship.
The
Indian traditions and social life of different types of Indian culture beyond
music, dance, yoga, need to be showcased on an international level, for which
Dr. Saharsrabuddhe said, he along with his team of ICCR would ensure that the
wider concept of culture and civilization encompassing a wide range of subjects
from food to fabric, handicrafts to folk-art and diversity of traditions to
emerging varieties of tourism would be on his agenda.
President Ram Nath Kovind on
Friday appointed MP, Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe as the President of Indian Council
of Cultural Relations.ICCR, which was founded in 1950 by India's first
Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who also served as its first
President and. Former Presidents’ Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma and K.R. Narayanan,
Former Prime Ministers P.V. Narasimha Rao and Atal Bihari Vajpayee have also
held this prestigious post.
The ICCR's main objectives are to actively participate in
the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes pertaining to
India's external cultural relations and to foster and strengthen cultural relations
and mutual understanding between India and other countries.
